Porthcurno Beach: A Return Visit Reveals Changes
We recently revisited Porthcurno Beach in August 2024, a place we had fond memories of from four years ago. This time, our experience was quite different, highlighting how popular beaches can change over time.
Getting There and Parking
The beach is a 10-minute walk from the car park, which fills up quickly. Here are some tips for visitors:
- Use the RingGo app for parking payment, but be aware of poor phone signal.
- We found free WiFi near the museum building to complete our payment.
- Coin-operated ticket machines are available if you prefer cash.
Accessibility and Facilities
- The path to the beach is steep in places and not suitable for pushchairs.
- For families with babies or toddlers, we strongly recommend using a carrier.
- Toilet facilities are available at the end of the car park heading towards the beach path but not on the beach itself.
Our Beach Experience
Our return to Porthcurno Beach was a study in contrasts:
Four Years Ago
- Nearly empty beach with only five other people
- Clean sand and water
- Peaceful and pristine environment
August 2024
- Extremely crowded
- Noticeable issues with litter, including rubbish and discarded clothing both on the beach and in the water
- Some visitors smoking, drinking alcohol, and playing loud music
Despite these challenges, we stayed for over an hour. The natural beauty of Porthcurno is still evident, but the increase in visitors has clearly had an impact.
Looking Ahead
While our recent visit was disappointing compared to our previous experience, we’re not ready to write off Porthcurno Beach entirely. We plan to give it another chance in the future, hoping to recapture some of the magic we remember.
